Ultimately, Khan was selected over Brook, and although Brook maintained at the time that his interests lay in professional boxing rather than Olympic fame, the two boxers have been at odds ever since.
After the Olympics, the pair’s careers diverged. Olympic fame (and later, a reality TV show) would help ‘King Khan’ secure his position as the poster boy of British Boxing after unifying the light welterweight division between 2009 and 2012. Meanwhile, Brook racked up a series of uninterrupted wins at welterweight – including one on the undercard the night Khan became world champion – before entering the pantheon of British boxing history when he became IBF welterweight champion in 2014. Like Khan, Brook held the title for three years until Errol Spence Jr. defeated him in 2017.
More recently, both fighters attempted, without success, to step out of their usual weight divisions. In 2016, Brook fought WBC, IBF and IBO champion Gennadiy Golovkin, suffering a heavy loss and severely damaged eye sockets for his trouble; meanwhile in the middleweight division, Khan saw a similar defeat at the hands of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in the same year. These ill-fated matchups (from which many feel the boxers never fully recovered) occurred just as it was looking likely that the pair would finally meet in the ring after years of verbal sparring.
Top calibre fighters in their primes, both Brook and Khan are now in the twilight stages of their careers and threatening to retire, meaning this fight could be a legacy-defining finale for either party. Nicknamed ‘Miss GB’, Jonas was the first female boxer to represent Great Britain at the Olympics in London 2012 and has since fought for the world title on two occasions so the 37-year-old is hoping that the third time’s the charm come Saturday night.
Another name to look out for is super-heavyweight Frazer Clarke who is set to make his professional debut after winning a Bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Now signed to Anthony Joshua’s 258 MGT management label, Clarke also won numerous other medals at European and Commonwealth championships before now turning to the pro game at 30-years-old.
